Success Stories

Irma Kalender

Irma Kalender

My name is Irma Kalender, and I am a first generation, second-year Pre-Law student at
Maryville University. My journey with the Saint Louis Balkan American Community, also
known as STLBAC, began with its thoughtful introduction to myself by Dr. Vedada Becirovic, whose dedication to fostering community engagement has been instrumental in my involvement
with the organization.

Before discovering STLBAC, I found myself disconnected from the wealth of opportunities and resources available within the local Balkan community. As a student, I lacked awareness of professional events and engagement projects that could enhance my educational journey.

Once I gained more insight into the wide array of professional events held by STLBAC, I immediately got involved. Through the organization I was awarded a Community Engagement grant. With this grant, I received the opportunity to partner up with a friend to start a non-profit organization called STL Unity Drive, an annual donation drive for immigrants and refugees. With this grant I was also introduced to my mentor, Sumeja Seferovic, whose mentorship has been invaluable in navigating the project.

Additionally, volunteering for the silent auction event provided me with firsthand experience in community involvement, while being a part of the student panel discussion
empowered me to share insights with high school students, fostering a sense of purpose and connection.

STLBAC’s support has truly made an impact on me. Thanks to them, I’ve found many
scholarship opportunities, specifically the BAPA scholarship as well as a scholarship opportunity through a Law firm, which pertains to my professional career. I feel much more confident in myself. I can see real results, like knowing more about scholarships and being better at networking, all thanks to what STLBAC has provided for me.

I am immensely grateful to STLBAC and its dedicated team for their unwavering support and commitment to fostering community engagement. To those facing similar challenges or seeking guidance, I wholeheartedly recommend STLBAC. Your unique approach, tailored support, and genuine dedication set you apart, making you an invaluable resource for individuals in our community striving to realize their full potential.

Majda Civic

Majda Civic

My name is Majda Civic. I am from Utica, NY. I was introduced to STLBAC through my fiancé (who is from St. Louis) when we brought up the idea of moving. He explained to me the purpose of the organization and we realized it was a great start in trying to connect to professionals to begin a search for my new career opportunity. I spent months actively applying for jobs and reaching out to recruiters but coming from a small town with limited resources I had no luck. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity and had some work experience. I took the chance and got into contact with STLBAC through their Instagram page. I sent them my resume and immediately they posted a story asking if there was anyone in the same field and looking to connect. The same day I sent my resume to three different individuals. One being Dzana Valjevcic who is the Human Resources Manager at Faith Group in St. Louis. I got the chance to speak to her directly about what I was looking for career wise and she introduced me to the company. She spoke to different leads in the company and made sure to get my resume in front of the right person. Shortly, after I interviewed with Faith Group I received an offer letter. I am so thankful for STLBAC helping me establish a connection with the right person and company. Moving to a new city and only knowing a handful of people was terrifying. I had no idea where to start when it came to my career search. My fiancé and I have since made the move to St. Louis with our 4-month-old baby girl, and I have joined Faith Group as the Operations Specialist. Without STLBAC none of this would have been possible. If anyone is looking to establish a connection with professionals, reach out to STLBAC!

I learned about Saint Louis Balkan American Connection during my sophomore year at Saint Louis University after meeting with Dr. Alagic. After my initial exposure to it, I quickly wanted to become more involved after my own experiences as a Balkan American, specifically as a first-generation college student. I felt behind in comparison to my peers because my school did not offer that challenging of a curriculum nor did I have access to private tutors for standardized test preparation. Also, being a pre-health student, I felt that my peers all had a physician in the family to shadow and numerous more connections. Throughout the past year, STLBAC has provided me with many resources, ranging for scholarship awareness to making connections with professionals, and have worked hard to reunite the Balkan community. STLBAC has also given me the opportunity to give back to the community. I and Amir Ugarak were awarded an STLBAC Community Engagement Grant for our project of planting 300 trees in areas with a large Balkan population. We are very excited to work alongside Admir Brakic, our professional mentor, to benefit our community in various ways: economically, physically, and environmentally name a few. STLBAC has given back to me, and the entire community, in numerous ways and continue to be a gift in the community. I would not have the number of opportunities I have had this past year without this organization, and I am very grateful and thankful for them.

I first heard about Saint Louis Balkan American Connection from Dr. Alagic during my sophomore year at Saint Louis University. I was very excited after learning about the organization and its purpose. I’ve experienced many of the disadvantages and struggles that come with being a Balkan American and first-generation college student. As a pre-health student, I have struggled with contacting physicians and other healthcare professionals in hopes of shadowing them. STLBAC changed this and provided me with numerous resources and opportunities to meet many of the wonderful healthcare workers in our community. Furthermore, I and Elma Bjelevac were awarded an STLBAC Community Engagement Grant which will allow us to lead a project inviting members of our community to plant 300 trees in and around areas with large Balkan populations. With Admir Brakic as our professional mentor, we anticipate this project to have a great impact on the community with multiple economic, health, environmental, and community benefits. This organization truly is an invaluable resource to all members of our community. I would like to thank STLBAC and the three women who made their dreams our reality.

I originally learned of STLBAC while working with Dr. Alagić last year. As a pre-dental student at SLU, and the first person in my family to be on any sort of pre-professional track, I had no form of mentorship and was honestly clueless about how to make myself the best applicant for such a competitive field. I distinctly remember the panic that set in during my first dental internship as every other student explained that one or both of their parents were dentists. They had all been shadowing at their parent’s dental offices since high school, and I felt so far behind. After working with STLBAC and applying for their Community Engagement Grant, I was able to connect with two dentists in our community, Dr. Adis Hasanagić and Dr. Vedrana Sedić. This enabled me to both begin my own research and learn more about how people with a similar background to me were able to overcome the obstacles that I have been struggling with during my undergraduate years. The shared experiences and knowledge that they are able to provide has been invaluable to my application process and has made me feel so much more confident in my career choice. The mentorship that I have received from STLBAC has taught me that I have resources within my community and people who want to make sure that future generations of students don’t need to go through the same struggles that they did in reaching their career goals.

While in school to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner I struggled finding preceptors. I emailed and talked directly to countless Psychiatrists and Nurse Practitioners. I was so discouraged and stressed out. I thought this would set me back in school. But then you guys featured Aldijana Sacic as a mentor. I contacted her for advice. She was able to be my preceptor as well as help me get in contact with other preceptors. Not only was she my mentor through school but she is now my colleague and a lifelong friend. I am forever thankful for meeting her.

Moving back to Saint Louis after 5 years away, I had no healthcare connections and was in desperate need for preceptors for my Nurse Practitioner program. I found your page and messaged many of the nurse practitioners you guys posted and they helped lead me in the right direction! Thank you so much for helping me when I needed it the most.

After I graduated nursing school back in May, I was unsure of what I wanted my future to look like. I knew I wanted to further my education but wasn’t sure what route to take.

I attended the STLBAC physician panel event that took place over the summer and met a resident physician who had recently graduated at the University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Medicine. Through his help and guidance, I was able to sign up for medical school back home in Bosnia. I started in October and it has been a great experience so far.

Attending that one meeting (which happened to be the first and only STLBAC event I had ever attended) changed my life, and for that l will forever be grateful.

Lejla Ugarak

I first learned about STLBAC through Dr. Alagic last year while I was the president of the Bosnian Club at SLU. She explained to me the purpose of the organization and I quickly realized it was a brilliant idea that would help so many Balkan-Americans, including myself. I had always felt at a disadvantage like many other first-generation college students, but especially those that are the children of immigrants or immigrants themselves. Prior to STLBAC, I was a pre-med student who had done very little shadowing due to lack of connections with physicians nearby. I was able to go on the STLBAC Instagram and get into contact with doctors willing to help, like Dr. Esad Kiveric. I also met and learned about the field of Perfusion for the first time ever at a physician panel hosted by STLBAC during the summer. There I started a conversation with Amela Turnadzic, who is the Assistant Chief of Perfusion at BJC, and she was kind enough to let me shadow and I learned just how cool Perfusion actually is. After that, I applied to the Perfusion program at McGovern Medical School and have been invited to interview with them. I’m very grateful to STLBAC for how much they’ve already helped me, because without them, I would have never learned about perfusion. But even more broadly, they are an invaluable resource for students to turn to for mentors, as well as support in their careers from professionals in our community who want to help the next generation succeed. None of this would be possible without the mentors who are willing to dedicate their time with the goal of passing on their knowledge, making it so much easier for the students now than it was for them. And of course, a special thank you to the three women who started it all.

Amina Hasanagic

Entering a graduate-level medical program was not only daunting due to the difficulty of the program itself, but also the financial constraint that it puts on its students who are strongly advised against working while in the program. Without any source of income, we are expected to take out loans for tuition and living expenses (technology, books, housing, food, etc) for 3 years. With letters of recommendation from 2 mentors I met through STLBAC, I applied for a federally funded full tuition scholarship and received the news that I was accepted. Out of thousands of applicants in the United States, less than 100 were chosen and I recognize and am grateful for the advantage that these mentors provided me in this pursuit. This scholarship allows me to focus on my studies with no financial burden, as it provides me with a full ride and monthly educational stipend.

My passion for medicine started at a young age. While I was in high school, my dad was in a near fatal accident and I quickly learned about and managed his medical care. This personal experience initiated my interest in medicine, but the only path I was aware of was medical school. Through a post on STLBAC, I found Asmir Selimovic, an anesthesiologist assistant in St. Louis. I reached out to him, shadowed, and spent time learning about the profession. I am now in my first year of AA school and am extremely grateful for the opportunity STLBAC granted me to find my dream career!
